Reykjavík Film Festival

The Reykjavík Film Festival will be an international cultural event that will be held in Bíó Paradís and several other locations from September 12-21, 2014. The festival is run by Heimili kvikmyndanna, a nonprofit organization. The festival website, is under construction, and will be reopened soon reyfilmfest.is

The Reykjavík Film Festival’s main section will be a tribute to the best of new European cinema. In addition, a wide array of the most prominent, award-winning films from around the globe will be introduced to Icelandic audiences, and contemporary Icelandic cinema will be given an important focus. One of our main goals is to provide a platform for the domestic and international film communities to come together, and to foster cooperation and collaboration between all of the key institutions within the Icelandic film industry. The festival will be held on yearly basis.

The Reykjavík Film Festival will draw on the expertise and the professional networks that Bíó Paradís has already established, including the international festivals, professional associations, sales agents and distributors that it works with every day. The festival is made possible through the financial support of the city of Reykjavík, and we will look forward to a close collaboration with Íslandsstofa (Promote Iceland) and many other local, regional and international partners.

The festival’s home will be Bíó Paradís, Reykjavík’s only independent art-house cinema, located right in the heart of downtown Reykjavík. The cinema, which is operated by Heimili kvikmyndanna, regularly screens the latest art-house releases, classic and cult films, documentaries, shorts and programs for children and youth audiences. Other festival venues will be announced later in the year. We look forward to welcoming you in Iceland this September to the new edition of the Reykjavík Film Festival!

More about the Reykjavík Film Festival

The organization Heimili kvikmyndanna (or “The Home of Cinema”) is resurrecting the Reykjavík Film Festival, the oldest film festival in the Nordic countries, which was first held between 1978 and 2002.

The first edition of the festival was held in conjunction with the Reykjavík Arts Festival in February of 1978. The director of the arts festival at that time was Davíð Oddsson, and the director of the film festival was the celebrated Icelandic filmmaker Fridrik Thór Fridriksson. The guest of honor was the German director Wim Wenders and most of the films were presented in Háskólabíó, and others in Tjarnarbíó.

From then on, the Reykjavík Film Festival was held every two years, as was the arts festival. In 1997 the film festival became independent from the arts festival for the first time and was organized by the Icelandic Filmmakers Association. It became an annual event until 2002, when it was disbanded. Heimili kvikmyndanna is proud to be able to bring the festival back to Icelandic audiences and international guests in the fall of 2014.
