Rússneskir kvikmyndadagar / Russian film days
Dagana 23. – 27. október verða rússneskir kvikmyndadagar haldnir í Bíó Paradís í samstarfi við Sendiráð rússneska sambandsríkisins á Íslandi. Myndirnar verða sýndar á rússnesku með enskum texta utan kvikmyndarinnar Leviathan sem sýnd er með íslenskum texta. Það besta úr rússneskri kvikmyndagerð, fjölbreyttar verðlaunamyndir sem enginn ætti að láta fram hjá sér fara. Frítt er inn á opnunarmyndina þann 23. október kl 18:00.
Russian film days, will be held in Bíó Paradís October 23rd – October 27th 2014 in cooperation with the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Iceland. Films will be screened in the original Russian language with the English subtitles, except Leviathan. A selection of award winning films mixed with current Russian cinema. Free entrance to the opening film October 23rd at 18:00.

The Postman’s White Nights // Belye nochi pochtalona Alekseya Tryapitsyna (2014)

The film represents life in a godforsaken Russian village. The only way to reach the mainland is to cross the lake by boat and a postman became the only connection with the outside world. A reserved community has been set up here. Despite the modern technologies and a spaceport nearby the people of the village live the way they would in the Neolithic Era. There is neither government nor social services or jobs. The postman’s beloved woman escapes the village life and moves to the city. Postman’s outboard engine gets stolen and he can no longer deliver mail. His normal pattern of life is disrupted. The postman makes a decision to leave for the city too but returns before long with no certain reason. The script is based on real characters’ stories. People from the village play their own parts in the film. The search for the protagonist lasted for over a year.
The film won the Silver Lion for best director and the Green Drop Award at Venice Film Festival 2014.

”Leviathan” is a modern day retelling of the Biblical story of Jobs set in contemporary Russia. Kolia lives in a small town near the Barents Sea, in North Russia. He has his own auto-repair shop. His shop stands right next to the house where he lives with his young wife Lilya and his son from a previous marriage Romka. Vadim Sergeyich, the Mayor of the town, wants to take away his business, his house and his land. First he tries buying off Kolia but Kolia isn’t interested in money, he doesn’t want to lose everything he has: not only the land, but also all the beauty that has surrounded him from the day of his birth. As Vadim Sergeyich starts being more aggressive, Kolia asks his best friend Dmitri, a lawyer from Moscow, to help him, unaware that this would change his life forever. The film was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or in the main competition section at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. Andrey Zvyagintsev and Oleg Negin won the award for Best Screenplay. The film won the best film at BFI London Film Festival 2014. The film is Russia´s nomination for the Oscar´s.
